Setup

Mac OS X Server provides directory information by hosting a shared LDAP directory domain. In addition, the server authenticates users whose accounts are stored in the shared LDAP directory domain. Any Mac OS X Server installation can serve as an Open Directory Master.

 

Apple's Server has streamlined the OD setup process, just open the Server app and click on the Open Directory Service. From here, click on the ON button.
